Employment Equity

The Wildfire Management Branch is a leader in employment equity through acclaimed initiatives such as our First Nations Unit Crew Program.

In 1991, 10 First Nations unit crews were formed to increase participation of First Nations people in the B.C. Forest Service. In 1993, we expanded the program to 18 unit crews.

This program provides seasonal employment for about 360 First Nations crew members; reduces the cost of fire suppression; and offers meaningful employment and marketable job skills for First Nations.

These crew members are selected and hired by Forest Service staff. Applicants must successfully complete all phases of the selection process including screening, interview, and pre-employment fitness standard.

As with all of British Columbia's fire fighters, First Nations unit crew members must be highly motivated, in superior physical shape, have excellent team spirit and be committed to the safest possible work standards.
